More EV Charging Facilities To Be Constructed Across Sarawak
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government plans to build more electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities in phases at strategic locations across the state.
Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi noted that the infrastructure development will also focus on main routes and high-potential areas to support the growth of EV usage in Sarawak.
“The Sarawak Government, through Sarawak Energy and SEDC Energy, also has plans to build EV chargers at strategic locations in stages.
“This includes along the alignment of the Pan Borneo Highway, the Coastal Road, and the Sarawak–Sabah Link Road (SSLR),” he said.
He said this during his ministerial winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday.
Dato Sri Julaihi informed that as of April 2026, a total of 153 EV chargers are operating across Sarawak, with most locations concentrated in major locations such as Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
Recently, Serembu Assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh, when debating the Motion of Appreciation on the address delivered by the Sarawak Governor, emphasised the need to expand EV charging facilities, especially in rural areas and along long-distance inter-city routes.
He noted that the lack of charging infrastructure remains one of the main factors causing consumer concern over owning EVs, despite the growing interest in the technology.
In his proposal, he also urged for more charging stations to be developed along the Pan Borneo route, in small towns, shopping malls, hotels and petrol stations, alongside providing incentives to private companies that develop EV infrastructure and executing a comprehensive Sarawak EV network development plan. -UKASnews
