MIRI: Miri is continuing its transformation into a smart, green and highly liveable city in line with the Sarawak Government’s aspiration to position it as a sustainable, inclusive and competitive international resort destination.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said over the past 21 years since being declared a city, Miri has undergone rapid transformation spanning infrastructure development, economic expansion, tourism growth, public amenities, environmental sustainability and community wellbeing.
According to him, these achievements were successfully realised as a result of close collaboration between local authorities, government agencies, the private sector and the local community.
"A successful city is not only measured through physical development alone, but also depends on the attitude, discipline and unity of its people," he said.
His text of speech was read by Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil at the Miri City Day Flag Raising Ceremony in conjunction with the 21st anniversary of Miri City at the Miri City Hall on Thursday.
Datuk Amar Dr Sim added that the flag raising ceremony is not just an annual symbolic event, but rather carries great meaning as a symbol of dignity, identity, unity and pride of Mirians.
In this regard, the MPHLG Minister called on the entire community, irrespective of background, culture and belief, to continue to unite in shouldering the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness, safety, harmony and sustainability of Miri City for future generations.
He added that modern cities must continue to grow in order to remain competitive and sustainable in line with global changes and the current needs of the people.
"The state government greatly appreciates the city administration's commitment in implementing various strategic initiatives towards making Miri a smarter, greener and more liveable international resort city,” he said.
