Lawas Targeted As Northern Sarawak’s Economic & Development Hub
LAWAS: Lawas continues to be positioned as a new economic growth and development centre in northern Sarawak through the implementation of various strategic projects involving infrastructure, education and industrial development.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, said Lawas holds significant potential to grow as a future development hub, including in new economic sectors, skills development and industrial investment.
According to him, the Sarawak Government is actively implementing various development projects, including road networks, bridges, commercial areas, a new airport, port facilities and industrial zones to create more economic opportunities for the people.
“The Sarawak Government also continues to place emphasis on educational development, including educational assistance, skills development centres and free tertiary education to produce a knowledgeable and highly skilled generation,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Minor Rural Project (MRP) Grant Presentation Ceremony and Student Incentive Assistance event held at Roxy Hotel on Monday.
He added that the development of Lawas must progress in tandem with human capital development so that the people, particularly youths, can benefit from the economic opportunities created by the government.
He said the younger generation must be prepared to face future economic challenges by seizing opportunities in entrepreneurship, the digital economy and modern technology.
Meanwhile, he also reminded parents to constantly monitor their children to prevent them from becoming involved in social problems and drug abuse, which could jeopardise the future of the younger generation.
At the event, MRP grants were presented to 150 recipients comprising Village Security and Development Committees (JKKK), mosques, suraus, associations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
In addition, 19 outstanding 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students from the Lawas District, along with 82 student incentive recipients, also received assistance in recognition of their academic achievements.
Also present were Dato Henry Sum Agong, Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) Regional Director Datu Ubaidillah Abdul Latip, Limbang Division Resident Unus Tambi, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Awangku Jinal Abedin Pengiran Jawa, Lawas District Officer Ladin Atok, as well as heads of departments. -UKASnews
