Sirung-Chenda Project Expected To Boost Sarawak Revenue By 2028
KUCHING: The Sirung-Chenda development project is expected to become one of the key drivers of Sarawak’s revenue growth by 2028, in line with efforts to strengthen the state’s energy sector.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said with the project targeting first production in 2028 and a combined production capacity of about 15,000 barrels per day, it is expected to have a significant impact on state revenue through the strengthening of the oil and gas industry.
He added that amid ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting oil and gas market prices, developments such as Sirung remain important in an increasingly uncertain global energy market.
“The responsible development of our gas resources is not merely an industrial opportunity, but also a strategic source of fiscal strength, economic resilience and long-term value for the state and its people,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the contract signing ceremony between PTTEP Sarawak Oil Limited and Brooke Holding Sdn Bhd (BHSB) for the Sirung Production Platform Project at a leading hotel here on Tuesday.
The Sarawak Premier said revenue generated from the energy project could be reinvested into public development projects such as roads, bridges, water supply systems, electricity infrastructure, schools, clinics, digital connectivity and social assistance programmes.
He added that such development would also extend further into Sarawak’s rural areas, while continuing to strengthen education, healthcare and public service delivery in a more confident and sustainable manner.
“When I say projects like Sirung benefit Sarawak, I do not mean only in terms of petroleum economic value.
“I mean in the form of roads being built, villages being connected, students being supported, services being improved and opportunities being created,” he said.
According to him, through the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), Sarawak will continue to produce a highly skilled workforce to support strategic industries, including energy, oil and gas, as well as advanced technology sectors. -UKASnews
