Allegations Of Discrimination In Provision Of Festive Assistance In Sarawak Groundless
KUCHING: Allegations of the supposed existence of racial and religious discrimination in the provision of festive assistance in Sarawak are groundless and do not reflect the true reality of the state's society.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the Sarawak Government always practices an inclusive approach by channeling assistance according to the needs and practices of each community, regardless of racial or religious backgrounds.
According to him, the issue arose after he contributed 16 cattle in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration, which was subsequently questioned by certain parties.
"I told them that in my own area, I have contributed nearly 200 to 300 pigs for the community to rear, but the sacrificial ritual (ibadah korban) is not carried out in that manner.
“Those who raise the matter actually do not understand the true situation on the ground because for us, helping all people is a priority.
"We have a role model, which is the Premier of Sarawak, so we follow his approach, policies, actions, and programs because everything benefits the people," he said.
He said this when met by reporters at the 2026 Gawai Dayak Open House celebration, which was officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) Complex on Monday.
In line with that, he urged all parties not to play up racial or religious sentiments that could jeopardize the harmony of the state, but instead collectively contribute ideas and energy to develop Sarawak.
He added that Sarawak's success today is the result of close cooperation among people of various races who always prioritise unity and mutual respect for one another. — UKASnews
