SUPP’s Fighting Spirit Remains Relevant For Sarawak’s Future
MIRI: The fighting spirit of the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP), rooted in inclusiveness, justice, and unity, remains relevant in facing current challenges and building a more advanced and prosperous future for Sarawak.
Sarawak Minister for Transport and Senadin Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said since its establishment on June 4, 1959, SUPP has consistently fought for the rights of Sarawakians regardless of race, religion, or cultural background.
According to him, SUPP holds a unique position in Sarawak's political history as the first political party established during the British colonial era and continues to play a vital role in Sarawak's development to this day.
“Despite facing various challenges throughout the 67 years since its founding, SUPP remains relevant due to the unity, resilience, and commitment of its members in serving the people.
“The multi-racial diversity within this party is a primary strength that has contributed to the success and stability of SUPP's struggle from the past until now,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Flag Raising Ceremony in conjunction with the 67th Anniversary of SUPP held at Unity Hall here on Thursday.
The program, organised by the SUPP Miri-Sibuti Parliamentary Liaison Committee together with five branches — Senadin, Pujut, Piasau, Lambir, and Bekenu — gathered party leaders and members to commemorate the history and struggle of SUPP since its inception.
Dato Sri Lee added that despite facing various pressures during the colonial era, past leaders remained steadfast in defending the aspirations of the people to achieve self-governance, justice, and better development for the state.
At the same time, he urged the younger generation to understand the history of the formation of Malaysia and important documents such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report, and the Cobbold Report.
He said that understanding this history is crucial to ensuring that Sarawak's rights, autonomy, and constitutional position continue to be preserved and defended for future generations.
Also present were Miri City Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang as well as representatives and party members from the five SUPP branches in the Miri and Sibuti areas. — UKASnews
