Sarawak State Election Date Subject To Sarawak Premier's Prerogative
KUCHING: Any determination regarding the date of the Sarawak State Election (PRN) Sarawak State Election (PRN) is subject to the prerogative of the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg who holds the power and discretion to request the dissolution of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).
Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that despite various speculations, including the possibility of the election being held within around 100 days, the final decision on the matter can only be determined by the Premier of Sarawak.
“I can only say here that the individual who might be able to tell roughly when the election date will be held is the Premier of Sarawak, because the prerogative and discretion to dissolve the DUN lie in his hands.
“But we do not need to worry too much because I feel that at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) or opposition level, everyone is already aware that the election must be held in the near future, which is this year,” he said during a press conference here on Friday.
He, who is also the Information Chief of the Sarawak Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), added that the state election indeed needs to be held this year, considering that the term of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly will expire at the end of the year.
According to him, the matter is no longer a secret since all parties are well aware of the need to hold the election within the stipulated period.
Commenting further, Dato Sri Abdul Karim said that current political developments in several states in Peninsular Malaysia are also among the factors that can be observed when determining the election schedule in the future.
However, he emphasised that any decision regarding the dissolution of the DUN and the election date remains the absolute prerogative of the Premier of Sarawak. — UKASnews
