Programme Anak Kita Reinforces Basic Literacy & Numeracy Of Sarawak Pupils
KUCHING: Sarawak’s Programme Anak Kita (PAK) plays an important role in strengthening the literacy and numeracy of students in preparation for producing a knowledgeable, skilled and competitive generation to fulfill Sarawak's development aspirations in the future.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said mastery of the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic is a priority that must be made a focus before students can master other fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), artificial intelligence (AI) and future skills.
According to him, PAK Sarawak was created to help students who need additional guidance through early and systematic intervention to close the learning gap thus increasing their confidence to continue learning with their peers.
"The success of PAK is not only measured through statistics or percentages, but through the confidence of a child who is now able to read independently, is no longer anxious about numbers and more actively participates in learning in the classroom," he said when speaking at the PAK Sarawak Learning Seminar 2026 Closing Ceremony in Kuching on Wednesday.
He added that strong mastery in literacy and numeracy is also the basis for the success of various educational initiatives implemented by the Sarawak Government including the Sarawak Dual Language Programme (DLP), Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP), STEM Catalyst and the Ujian Penilaian Dual Language Programme Year 6 (UP-DLP 6).
He explained that PAK is not just a literacy and numeracy intervention programme, but instead a strategic investment in the development of future talents as well as the long-term educational success of the state.
At the same time, Dato Sri Roland Sagah expressed his appreciation to the teachers who form the foundation of the programme’s success through their dedication, patience and commitment in guiding students who require additional support.
"Teachers remain the heart of education. They translate policies into actions, programmes into impact and opportunities into meaningful results for our children," he said.
Meanwhile, the seminar brought together school leaders, teachers, education officers and strategic partners to share best practices and experience in the implementation of PAK.
The programme was also enhanced with a school poster exhibition, a gallery visit session and the presentation of the PAK Sarawak Innovative Teaching Practice Award.
The audience was also treated to a montage of the three finalists for the PAK Sarawak Innovative Teaching Practice Award which highlighted the creative approach and best practices of teachers in strengthening students' mastery of literacy and numeracy before the award presentation session to the successful recipients.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and Deputy Director of the Learning Sector (SPB) Siti Zulaiha Ibrahim. -UKASnews
