Sports Serve As Key Platform To Produce Healthy & Smart Generation
MIRI: The 55th Annual Sports Championship of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) St. Joseph Miri is not just a sports competition arena, but also serves as an important platform in producing a generation of students who are balanced in terms of academics, personality and physical fitness.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said that active involvement in sports plays an important role in the holistic development of young people.
According to him, apart from academic excellence, education also needs to form individuals who are physically healthy, mentally resilient, emotionally balanced and responsible towards society.
“Through sports, students learn various life values such as discipline, teamwork, perseverance, leadership and respecting rules which will be valuable supplies throughout their lives,” he said when opening the 55th Annual Sports Championship of SMK St. Joseph Miri at the Miri Stadium on Wednesday.
He also stressed that success in sports is not only measured by winning or achieving new records, but rather through commitment, continuous effort and the courage to challenge oneself.
The Piasau Assemblyman further added that sports are a medium that can unite communities regardless of race, religion and background, in line with the spirit of unity that is Sarawak's main strength.
"The friendships formed on the sports field, the experience gained through competition and respect for other participants are important values in shaping responsible citizens and future leaders of the nation," he added.
In this regard, he urged all participating athletes to compete with the spirit of sportsmanship, integrity and honesty and to use every experience as an opportunity to improve themselves.
In the meantime, Datuk Sebastian informed that through the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), SMK St. Joseph Miri has received an allocation of RM630,000 for various school upgrading and improvement projects in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2025.
He said the investment reflects the government's commitment to providing a more conducive learning environment to produce quality future leaders.
At the same time, he expressed his appreciation to the school administration, teachers, organising committee, parents, volunteers and students who have worked hard to make the tournament a success. -UKASnews
