Samarahan Bike Challenge Reinforces Sports Tourism, Unearths Sarawak Cycling Talent
KUCHING: The organistion of the Samarahan Bike Challenge (SBC) 2026, which is entering its 10th edition, continues to strengthen its position as one of the major criterium cycling events in Sarawak, while playing a role in empowering sports tourism, unearthing young athletic talent, and stimulating local economic growth.
Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, stated that the success of organizing this event consistently for a decade proves the commitment of the organisers and all involved parties in ensuring the Samarahan Bike Challenge remains relevant and well-received by the cycling community from within and outside Sarawak.
According to him, the race, which will take place on 28 June in front of The Summer Shopping Mall, Kota Samarahan, is among the events listed in the Sarawak Calendar of Events 2026, resulting from a collaboration between the Samarahan District Office, Sarawak Ministry for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), and the Sarawak Cycling Association.
He said that the organisation of this challenge does not only impact sports development but also contributes to the local economy by increasing demand in the hospitality, restaurant, transport, craft enterprise, and local business sectors through the presence of athletes, officials, crews, and supporters.
“The returns from organising events like this may not come back directly to the government, but the benefits are felt by the industry and local community through the spillover of economic activities,” he said during a press conference for the Samarahan Bike Challenge 2026 at the Baitulmakmur Building on Friday.
Therefore, he said, the state government will continue to support the development of cycling sports as a platform to produce young athletes capable of competing at higher levels, in line with the aspiration to make Sarawak a sports hub or sports powerhouse in this region.
He noted that the growth of cycling sports in Sarawak is becoming increasingly proud, with two state mountain bike athletes currently representing Malaysia in Uzbekistan, while Sarawak track athletes also created success by capturing six gold, three silver, and three bronze medals at the recent National Track Championship.
The Samarahan Bike Challenge 2026 offers total prizes amounting to RM27,750 involving eight categories, namely Men Open, Sarawak Closed, Masters A, Masters B, Junior, Youth Men, Youth Women, and Women Open. This edition also sees the return of the Masters A and Masters B categories to replace the Veteran category.
To date, a total of 153 participants have registered, involving participations from Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada, and New Zealand, with registration still open until 27 June.
In relation to that, Dato Sri Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya Assemblyman, also invited the public to come and give their support to the racers on competition day, while hoping that the organistion of SBC will continue to be a platform to produce more high-performance cycling athletes as well as drive economic development and sports tourism in Samarahan.
