Sarawak To Upgrade 5,700 Kilometres Of Logging Roads In Stages
KAPIT: The Sarawak Government will implement a project to upgrade the entire 5,700 kilometres (km) of logging roads across the state in stages to enhance connectivity networks, subsequently boosting the development of rural areas.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the initiative is currently in the final stages of identifying and recording the road alignments before the phase-by-phase upgrading works commence, given that the project requires a substantial allocation.
“In Kapit alone, there are over 1,000 kilometres (km). We will upgrade these logging roads. In Baram, there are also more than 2,008 km. The largest portions are in Kapit and Baram, in addition to Lawas, Limbang, and Sri Aman.
“The total amount is 5,700 km,” he said.
He said this during a press conference after officiating the opening ceremony of the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) Programme 2026 for the Kapit Division here on Saturday.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister for Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Sarawak Cabinet Ministers, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Ministers, as well as Sarawak Assemblymen.
Touching on Kapit's development, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari noted that the state government also plans to develop the town into a modern, well-organised, and eco-friendly sustainable town.
“That is why we sent our officers from Kapit to Norway. This is our dream, hopefully becoming a reality where Kapit will become a unique, eco-friendly, and well-organised town with sustainable buildings.
“This is what we want to develop for the next five to 10 years. However, we have to adjust the master plan structure for this development,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta stated that the old Kapit airport area has also been identified for development as part of the town's development plan.
“The Premier of Sarawak will visit the site at the old airport, which we will propose to be developed with various amenities.
“In addition, to address traffic congestion in Kapit, the Premier of Sarawak has also approved two project packages worth RM58 million and RM93 million to upgrade roads.
“The Premier of Sarawak further approved allocations for the provision of other facilities through URDA,” he noted. — UKASnews
