Active Ageing Agenda Strengthened To Face 2028 Ageing State Status
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government continues to strengthen the active aging agenda in preparation for the status of an ageing state by 2028 through the implementation of various policies, initiatives and services that focus on the well-being, health and quality of life of the senior citizens.
Sarawak Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that the approach aims to ensure that senior citizens continue to live a healthy, active, productive and dignified life, in line with the changing demographic structure of the state.
"Sarawak will become an ageing state in 2028 and Brunei Darussalam is also heading in the same direction. Therefore, this visit gives us the opportunity to share experiences and best practices in preparing for the demographic change," she said.
She said this when met by the media after a courtesy visit by the delegation of the Brunei Muara District Senior Citizen Activity Centre (PKWE) at Baitul Makmur II Building, on Tuesday.
Dato Sri Fatimah added that Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam are currently facing similar demographic challenges as both are heading towards an ageing society, thus requiring early planning to ensure that the support system for the elderly continues to be strengthened.
She explained that her ministry also shared various state government initiatives designed to empower the well-being of senior citizens, including the provision of community support programmes and more comprehensive welfare services.
"The Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS) also presented the role of the Senior Citizen Activity Centre (PAWE) in promoting the concept of healthy, active, positive and productive ageing so that senior citizens continue to contribute to community development.
"We want senior citizens to enjoy a healthy life, stay active, productive and live with dignity and have a better quality of life," she said.
