Electric Buses Proposed To Strengthen Miri's Smart, Low-Carbon City Agenda
MIRI: The use of electric buses in Miri has been proposed as a strategic step towards realising a smarter, more sustainable and environmentally friendly city, in line with Sarawak's commitment to expanding the use of low-carbon technology.
The Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the use of electric buses would not only reduce emissions but also create a quieter urban environment, as such vehicles operate without generating noise.
He said the move is in line with Sarawak's aspiration to develop a low-carbon economy and position Miri as a clean and environmentally friendly city.
"I just proposed to the Mayor and colleagues in Miri that we might use electric buses in Miri.
"These electric buses produce no emissions and move silently. This means Miri will not only be clean in terms of air quality, but also quieter, free from noise pollution," he said.
He was speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival (TOBC) 4.0 2026 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, he said Miri's energy supply capacity is expected to be further enhanced by 2029, thereby ensuring sufficient electricity supply to support the use of green transportation, including electric buses.
At the same time, he stressed that the development of a smart city through digitalisation introduced in Miri will continue to be strengthened to improve the efficiency of urban management as well as ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents.
"The combination of digital technology, low-carbon energy and a green transportation system will strengthen Miri's position as a model of a sustainable city of the future in the region," he added.
