Batang Lupar 1 Bridge Recognised By MBOR As Malaysia's Longest River-Crossing Bridge
SEBUYAU: The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge has created history after being officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the recognition proves Sarawak's capability in carrying out large-scale infrastructure projects that bring significant impact to the state's development.
"We are very proud that today, MBOR will also be presenting a certificate recognising the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge as the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia," he said.
He said this when speaking at the Official Opening Ceremony of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge, officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, here, on Thursday.
He added that with an overall length of 4.844 kilometres and a value of RM848 million, the bridge has become a new engineering landmark that Sarawak can be proud of.
Touching on the challenges of its construction, Datuk Amar Douglas said the project was among the most challenging engineering projects in Malaysia, as it was built in an estuary area with strong currents from multiple directions, powerful waves, and complex geological conditions.
The Sarawak Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development added that the Batang Lupar Bridge project also made use of the largest launching gantry in Malaysia for the installation of bridge girders, in addition to a 108-metre-high piling barge, which was also the tallest ever used in the country.
He said the presence of Triso Island, which divides the river flow into two navigation channels, also increased the current speed by up to twofold, making construction even more challenging.
"However, with careful planning and innovative design, the bridge was successfully built without affecting the ecosystem of Triso Island, proving the Sarawak Government's commitment to carrying out development that prioritises environmental sustainability," he explained.
At the height of the ceremony, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah also received the certificate of recognition from MBOR for the proud achievement of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge, witnessed by the Sarawak Premier. -UKASnews
