BELAWAI: A total of RM108,500 was channeled to strengthen Kuala Rajang's fisheries sector through assistance to fishermen and seafood entrepreneurs in an effort to increase productivity and boost the economy of coastal communities.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that the distribution of aid reflects the government's continued commitment in supporting fishermen and local fishing industry players.

According to him, the assistance provided covers the operational needs of fishermen and support to entrepreneurs to strengthen the entire process of the fishing industry, from fishing activities to the production of products based on sea products.

"The government always considers the needs of the fishing community so that they can not only increase their catch, but also have the opportunity to expand economic activities through the downstream sector.

"This effort is important to ensure that the fishing industry continues to grow and benefit the coastal community," he said.

He said this while speaking at the Handover Ceremony of Touch Point Assistance and Assistance Delivery and Support Services System (SPeKS) at the Belawai Community Hall, here, on Monday.

The Kuala Rajang Assemblyman said that a total of 60 fishermen from Belawai, Jerijeh, Rajang, Paloh and Kedang received Touch Point Assistance worth RM40,000 in the form of insulation boxes and nets to help improve their operational efficiency.

At the same time, three entrepreneurs related to the fishing industry also received assistance from SPeKS amounting to RM68,500 to support fish-based steamed bun production activities, fishery product processing and the collection of marine products.

He said that the assistance not only provides support in terms of equipment and production capacity, but also helps create more economic opportunities in the local community.

Datuk Len said that strengthening the fisheries sector requires close cooperation between the government, relevant agencies and industry players so that marine resources can be utilised steadily.

He added that efforts to strengthen Kuala Rajang's fishing industry will continue to be given attention to ensure that coastal communities enjoy the benefits of more sustainable economic development in the future. -UKASnews
