KUCHING: The Bintawa Kotak Roundabout was launched as a tribute to the pioneers of Bintawa and serves as a strong reminder of an important chapter in Kuching’s history.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said that Bintawa has long been known as one of Kuching's earliest fishing settlements, where the hard work of fishermen helped supply fresh seafood to the townspeople while contributing to the growth of the city.

“The centrepiece of this roundabout is the kotak, a traditional fishing boat once widely used by the fishermen of Bintawa. For many families, the kotak was more than just a boat.

“It was their workplace, their source of income, and the symbol of hope for a better future. Every journey on the river represented the courage, resilience and determination of those who built their lives from the waters surrounding Kuching,” he said.

He said this during the Bintawa Kotak Roundabout launching here on Monday evening.

According to him, as Kuching continues to modernise, heritage must also not be forgotten.

“Development is not only about constructing new buildings and roads. It is also about preserving the stories, traditions and memories that define who we are.

“This is why MBKS chose to revive the memory of the kotak through this landmark. We want future generations to know that before Bintawa became the vibrant community it is today, it was home to hardworking fishermen whose contributions laid part of the foundation for Kuching's development.

“By documenting and celebrating this heritage, we are ensuring that their legacy will continue to live on,” he emphasised.

Dato Wee also expressed his appreciation to the Kuching Fishing Kotak Association and thanked them for preserving the history of the kotak and the fishing community for sharing their invaluable knowledge. -UKASnews
