PETROS, PETRA Achieve First Oil From Adong Kechil West Early Production System
MIRI: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) and PETRA Energy Berhad (PETRA) have achieved first oil production from the Adong Kechil West (AKW) Early Production System (EPS) in Block SK433, marking the revival of Sarawak's onshore oil and gas industry after nearly 50 years, according to a statement.
The milestone builds on AKW appraisal-development well drilling carried out in 2023 and reflects the successful delivery of a Sarawak-led effort to rejuvenate and develop the state's onshore petroleum resources, overcoming the technical complexities of onshore reservoirs, the statement said on Friday.
As a phased development approach, the EPS enables early production while providing reservoir and operational insights critical for enhancing future field development.
The data will support integrated development of surrounding discoveries as an AKW cluster, maximising resource potential and sustaining long-term gas supply.
AKW is expected to produce up to approximately 800 barrels of oil per day.
PETROS Senior Vice President for Sarawak Resource Management Dato Abang Arabi Abang Narudin said the milestone reflected not just a successful project but the strength of the partnership behind it.
"As Sarawak's Resource Manager for Onshore Petroleum Operations, PETROS remains committed to ensuring the responsible exploration and development of the state's hydrocarbon resources through purposeful partnerships and operational excellence, creating long-term value for Sarawak and its people," he said in the statement.
The next phase of AKW development will focus on delivering production facilities and essential infrastructure to sustain gas supply for the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant project, targeted for commissioning by end-2027.
By unlocking Sarawak's onshore petroleum resources, AKW is expected to strengthen supply resilience for Miri's future energy needs and reinforce the state's long-term energy security.
PETROS said the successful commencement of first oil at AKW validated the potential of Sarawak's onshore hydrocarbon resources, adding that it remains committed to responsibly exploring and developing these resources to strengthen the state's energy resilience. -UKASnews
