Sarawak Focuses On Green Energy Amidst Global Energy Crisis
KOTA KINABALU: Sarawak is in an exceptionally strong position to manage and buffer against the ongoing global energy crisis due to its advanced pivot toward green energy.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni spoke in the opening address of Offshore Energy Asia 2026 as the guest of honour.
He highlighted that the ongoing global energy crisis worldwide has severely caused the shortages and price spikes in energy resources such as oil, gas, and electricity were largely triggered by geopolitical conflicts, disrupted trade routes and a heavily strained fossil fuel market.
“The leadership in Sarawak has their way of managing these through several initiatives, namely immediate relief and cost-cushioning measures, targeted fuel and utility subsidies, as well as utilising hydropower.
“Additionally, Sarawak is also positioning itself as a regional hydrogen production hub, and has successfully transitioned from an energy-dependent state into a regional exporter,” he said through a video recording at the event.
According to him, to maintain long-term policy alignment, the state established the Sarawak Climate and Energy Diplomacy Unit (SACED) which ensures that Sarawak can swiftly adapt its trade policies, carbon markets, and green regulations to changing global dynamics.
Datuk Dr Hazland said that the Offshore Energy Asia 2026 is intentionally designed as a premier platform for robust investment, rich knowledge sharing, and groundbreaking business opportunities.
He added that Sarawak is proud to step forward and play a leading role as a reliable, secure, and resilient green energy hub.
“We are driving high-value business opportunities across the offshore sector. We are not merely adapting to the shifting global landscape, we are actively shaping it.
“Guided by the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) and our Sustainability Blueprint, we are pioneering advanced frontiers in clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), and floating solar innovations,” he said. -UKASnews
