Sarawak National Science Week 2026 Strengthens STEM Literacy & Future Energy Agenda
KUCHING: The National Science Week (MSN) 2026 event organised in Sarawak serves as an important platform to strengthen public literacy and interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), in line with efforts to develop highly skilled human capital in the state.
According to Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, the establishment of the Sarawak Science Centre marks a significant achievement in strengthening STEM capabilities and inspiring the public to explore the field through interactive and modern learning approaches.
“The close collaboration between the Federal Government and Sarawak enables us to provide an engaging and relevant learning environment for all segments of society,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the National Science Week celebration at the Sarawak Science Centre on Thursday.
Dato Sri Roland said the Sarawak Government was also actively developing a comprehensive STEM talent pipeline through the implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP), which enables students to learn Science and Mathematics in English to enhance their competitiveness at the global level.
He added that under the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) initiative, eligible Sarawak students have the opportunity to pursue studies in STEM-related fields without financial constraints, particularly at institutions owned by the state government.
Continuous efforts are also being carried out through various initiatives such as STEM Trailblazers, STEM Catalysts, the provision of computers and improvements to internet connectivity in rural schools, as well as research opportunities through BrightSparx grants.
To ensure the benefits of science are enjoyed by all communities, the MSN Sarawak Zone 2026 programme will be expanded through a mobile carnival involving Meradong, Bintulu and Belaga, in collaboration with the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS).
Commenting on this year’s MSN theme, which focuses on nuclear energy advocacy, he said the initiative was important in enhancing public understanding of the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
He stressed that the development of the modern energy sector requires a strong foundation in STEM fields, including physics, engineering and advanced technology, to produce a generation of competent scientists and engineers.
He added that the success of the state’s education and innovation agenda could only be achieved through close collaboration between the government, educational institutions, industry and the community. -UKASnews
