Haze: Major Sarawak Events Postponed, Malaysia Day Celebration Depends On Current Situation
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has decided to postpone several major events following the current haze and hot weather conditions affecting the state.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure, particularly to safeguard public health and safety.
“The Government has decided to postpone major events, namely the National Day celebration, Maulidur Rasul celebration and the Sarawakku Sayang Programme, which are scheduled to take place within the next one to two weeks.
“We have to postpone them because, especially for those suffering from asthma, we are quite concerned about the current weather conditions. We want to avoid any problems, so we have postponed everything because we are unable to proceed with them over the next two weeks,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating the AI For Makers: Borneo Makers Festival 2026 programme at TEGAS Digital Village here on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari said the 2026 National-level Malaysia Day celebration scheduled for 16 September remains dependent on the prevailing weather conditions and air quality.
He said the matter had been conveyed to Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during their recent meeting in Brunei Darussalam.
According to him, haze remains a concern, particularly in southern Sarawak, as the celebration is scheduled to be held in Kuching.
Therefore, he said the Sarawak Government would continue to monitor developments regarding the haze and weather conditions before deciding on further action concerning the organisation of upcoming events. -UKASnews
