SEBAUH: Skills education and training must continue to be aligned with industry needs to ensure Sarawak's younger generation possesses skills relevant to economic and technological changes.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn stated that advancements in technology, automation, digital systems and new energy sectors have increased the need for a workforce with specialised skills.

He noted that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) serves as a crucial pathway for students to acquire the skills required by the industry.

"TVET offers a valuable pathway for students to develop industry-relevant skills and pursue their career interests," he said while speaking at the MEITD 2026 Outreach Programme at SMK Sebauh on Saturday.

According to him, Sarawak requires a more skilled workforce in sectors such as manufacturing, digital technology, energy and high-tech industries to support the state's development.

He added that students should not view academic results as the sole determinant of their future, as there are various educational and skills-based pathways available to explore.

"If you are unable to proceed to other institutions, try the skills pathway. You are still young and have many years ahead to build your future," he said.

Meanwhile, Dato Sri Roland Sagah remarked that technical skills alone are insufficient to navigate the increasingly challenging job market.

He emphasised that young people must also master skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, digital competence and adaptability to change.

At the same time, he encouraged students to consider entrepreneurship by leveraging digital platforms to market local products to a wider audience.

“Digital platforms and technology enable small and local businesses to reach customers beyond their immediate communities.

“We aim to produce not only students who are ready to seek employment but also those capable of creating value, starting businesses and contributing to community development,” he said.
