Nearly 200 TikTok Challenge Entries Reflect Malaysia Day Spirit Among Sarawak Youths
KUCHING: Nearly 200 video entries in the UKAS TikTok Challenge held in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2026 reflect growing awareness among the public, particularly students, in understanding and expressing the spirit of Malaysia Day through a creative medium.
Director of the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan said the encouraging response proves that social media platforms like TikTok can be leveraged not only to produce creative content, but also as a medium to impart knowledge, foster understanding and strengthen unity.
According to him, the competition, organised by UKAS for the second time this year, follows the encouraging response to the TikTok Challenge held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2026, with this edition featuring public, primary school and secondary school categories.
“Competitions such as this indirectly spur creativity and provide opportunities for our youths, particularly school students, to produce works that convey messages creatively to the community.
“At the same time, participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the spirit of Malaysia Day itself,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the UKAS TikTok Challenge Competition in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2026 here on Wednesday.
The event was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
Awang Putrayusrie explained that the content creation process also encourages participants to prepare, fact-check and understand the subjects they wish to highlight before presenting them in video form.
He noted that this approach indirectly allows students to delve into the meaning of Malaysia Day before sharing that knowledge with the public through content that resonates with the younger generation.
“Through this competition, we can also gain knowledge, especially students at the primary and secondary school levels, in gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning of Malaysia Day.
“Through this TikTok Challenge, we can impart this knowledge, build understanding, strengthen unity and convey a clear message to the community,” he added.
For this edition, UKAS highlighted the theme ‘Anak Sarawak Jiwa Malaysia’ alongside diversifying competition segments to provide space for participants to showcase their respective creativity.
At the same time, he encouraged schools and participants to begin preparations earlier should a similar competition be held next year, particularly to produce more structured entries that meet the competition criteria.
He added that the use of creative platforms like TikTok aligns with UKAS’s efforts to expand the dissemination of information regarding various Sarawak Government initiatives to the public, particularly through approaches close to digital communication trends.
He expressed hope that the spirit demonstrated by participants through the competition will continue to be part of collective efforts to build a more progressive, prosperous and united Sarawak. -UKASnews
