Miri's Development Must Go Hand-in-Hand With People's Prosperity & Wellbeing
MIRI: Miri's development towards 2030 needs to translate into economic opportunities and improved quality of life that can be enjoyed by the community as a whole.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, who is also Piasau Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said economic growth must be accompanied by wider opportunities for young people, families and the local community.
"Development must have a purpose for people. Prosperity is more meaningful when young people have opportunities, families have security, senior citizens are cared for, the community remains united, and no one is left behind as Sarawak continues to progress," he said.
He said this while speaking at the 'MEC Mission and Evangelism Food Sales Fundraising Day at Malaysia Evangelical Theological Seminary' (METS), here, on Saturday.
He said the tourism sector is among the fields with potential to expand economic opportunities for the local community, through food businesses, transportation, homestays, handicrafts, performances and the production of local products.
He said young people also need to be equipped with skills in technology, tourism, hospitality, creative industries and entrepreneurship so that they are able to take advantage of growing economic opportunities.
Meanwhile, Datuk Sebastian stressed that economic progress must go hand-in-hand with efforts to preserve the environment and cultural heritage as treasures for future generations.
At the same event, he, together with Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, also visited charity sale booths as a show of support for participating vendors. -UKASnews
