Kuching LNG Terminal To Strengthen Sarawak's Gas Supply Infrastructure, First Gas Targeted For 2029
MUKAH: Sarawak will strengthen its gas supply infrastructure through the development of the Kuching Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal, with first gas targeted by the end of 2029.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the project is being developed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) in collaboration with a Norwegian maritime energy infrastructure company with more than 50 years of experience in floating LNG management.
"We have signed this with the Norwegian party and, under PETROS's programme, we will begin supplying floating LNG in Kuching in 2029.
"This is part of the low-carbon complex that we are building at Tanjung Embang," he told a press conference after officiating the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) Programme for Mukah Division 2026 here on Saturday.
He said the development marked another important step in strengthening Sarawak's gas industry, particularly in increasing the value of gas resources through downstream activities.
Sarawak also has the potential to develop small-scale LNG plants, using gas resources as feedstock to produce higher-value products, he added.
"If we have feedstock, we use the feedstock. From there, we can process this gas and carry out downstream activities," he said.
In a related development, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari said PETROS plays an important role in enabling Sarawak to understand the entire gas industry value chain more closely, thereby ensuring that the state's interests are taken into account in the development of the sector.
At the same time, he stressed that cooperation between PETROS and PETRONAS is important so that both parties can jointly develop the oil and gas industry.
"Many people say I want to kill PETRONAS, that PETROS will disrupt PETRONAS. We share between PETRONAS and us.
"If it is PETRONAS alone, perhaps their focus would be different and would not take us into account," he said.
On Oct 1, PETROS announced the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Höegh Evi, a Norway-based maritime energy infrastructure company, to develop the Kuching LNG Terminal as part of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH). -UKASnews
