UM Stunting Kit Strengthens Awareness Of Child Growth
BETONG: The launch of the UM Stunting Kit through the UM-ASSIST Betong Edition 2026 programme is among the efforts to strengthen public awareness of the importance of monitoring children's growth and addressing the risk of stunting early.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and Layar Assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said health monitoring, balanced nutrition and physical activity must be given attention to ensure that children grow up optimally.
"Health is the most important wealth. Apart from nutrition, physical activity and exercise are also important to ensure that children's growth and mental health are at a good level," he said.
He said this when officiating the programme at Dewan Panglima Rentap, Betong, on Saturday.
According to Datuk Gerald, stunting and obesity among children must be addressed seriously as they are closely linked to dietary practices and lifestyle.
He stressed that parents play an important role in ensuring that their children receive nutritious food, as well as encouraging physical activities suitable for their age.
Datuk Gerald also emphasised that childhood and adolescence are important phases in physical and brain development, hence continuous support from families, communities, educational institutions and government agencies is needed.
Meanwhile, University of Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) Director Assoc Prof ChM. Dr Noraini Ahmad said the programme provides a community-friendly educational platform to increase public knowledge about children's growth and health.
She said aspects such as nutrition, physical activity, hygiene and an environment that supports development need attention as children's health also affects family well-being and the future of society.
She said collaboration between universities and communities allows knowledge and expertise to be delivered more closely through direct interaction with families and communities.
