Serembu Assemblyman Proposes Long-Term Education Roadmap For Sarawak
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has been urged to develop a comprehensive long-term education and talent development roadmap with measurable targets to improve learning outcomes, rural digital access, technical skills and graduate employability.
Serembu Assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh said such a plan was important to ensure every child in Sarawak had access to quality education, regardless of poverty or geographical barriers.
“I propose that Sarawak develop a comprehensive long-term education and talent development roadmap, with measurable targets to improve learning outcomes, rural digital access, technical skills and graduate employability.
“Our goal must be clear: no Sarawakian child should be denied the opportunity to succeed simply because of poverty or geographical constraints,” he said.
He was speaking during the debate on the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting on Wednesday.
He said continued attention should be given to rural schools, particularly in terms of physical facilities, stable internet connectivity, digital learning equipment and adequate teaching resources.
Meanwhile, he urged the government to expand science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and digital learning from the early years of schooling to prepare the younger generation for advances in artificial intelligence (AI), automation and technological innovation.
“Our children must be prepared for a future driven by artificial intelligence (AI), automation and technological innovation.
“Therefore, I urge the government to expand access to computers, digital classrooms and STEM programmes, particularly in rural primary schools,” he added.
In a related development, Dato Miro also proposed strengthening educational assistance from early childhood, particularly for low-income families, to cover early childhood education, learning materials, remedial learning programmes and scholarships.
He said the application process for such assistance should also be simplified and administered transparently, ensuring it was easily accessible to those who genuinely needed it. -UKASnews
