Serembu Assemblyman Calls To Hasten Bau-Kuching Road Upgrade, Clear Implementation Timeline
KUCHING: The next phase of upgrading Jalan Bau-Kuching into a dual carriageway should be expedited to accommodate increasing traffic volume and support economic growth and development in Bau District.
Serembu Assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh said the upgrading of the main road should be prioritised as it serves as a vital link for residents of Bau and surrounding areas travelling to Kuching for work, education, healthcare and business purposes.
“I sincerely urge the Sarawak Government to seriously consider expediting the implementation of the next phase of this project and including it in future development programmes,” he said.
He was speaking during the debate on the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting on Wednesday.
He welcomed the upgrading works on the road from the Bau-Lundu junction to Bau town, which reportedly involved an allocation of RM74 million, but stressed that the project covered only one section of the entire road network.
He said he was concerned that the proposed upgrading of the entire Jalan Bau-Kuching route had not been specifically identified among the projects announced under the Sarawak 2027 Budget.
In this regard, he called on the government to clarify the current status of the overall upgrading programme, plans for subsequent phases, and whether specific allocations and an implementation timeline had been established.
In a related development, Dato Miro also urged the relevant agencies to expedite the approval process for pending development projects, including those that had been awaiting approval for more than a year.
He said clear timeframes should be established for the approval process to ensure planned projects could be implemented more efficiently and completed according to the stipulated schedules and standards.
“Too many projects have yet to receive approval from the relevant authorities, with some having been awaiting approval for more than a year and still remaining unapproved.
“I hope the relevant authorities will give these projects priority and establish clear timeframes for approving each project, not only in my constituency but throughout Sarawak,” he added. -UKASnews
