Miri Has Potential To Become Sarawak’s Martial Arts Hub
MIRI: Miri has the potential to emerge as Sarawak’s martial arts hub through a proposed dedicated stadium that would provide training and competition facilities, supporting athlete development from school level to higher levels of competition.
Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said the facility could accommodate various martial arts disciplines, including karate, taekwondo, silat and wushu, while creating opportunities for the city to host state, national and international championships.
He said martial arts development required suitable facilities and continued cooperation among associations, clubs, coaches and relevant parties to ensure that athletes’ talents could be identified, nurtured and developed systematically.
He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Miri Interschool Karate Championship 2026 here on Saturday.
The importance of nurturing talent from school level was reflected in the championship, which brought together 216 participants from 38 primary and secondary schools in the Miri District.
Held from 16 to 18 October, the championship provided students with an opportunity to test their skills, gain competition experience and improve their abilities in karate.
Adam also touched on a proposal to include karate in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) calendar, following discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister in late June 2026.
He said the initiative could broaden students’ opportunities to participate in more structured competitions, while establishing a pathway for athlete development from school level to higher levels of competition. -UKASnews
