299 Aids To Navigation Installed Along Sarawak's Major Rivers
KUCHING: A total of 299 Aids to Navigation (AtoN) have been installed along major rivers and designated waterways in Sarawak as of August 31, 2026, to enhance navigational safety and protect passengers, cargo, and riverine communities reliant on water transport.
Minister for Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that the installation of these aids assists vessel operators in identifying navigation channels and navigating under bridges with greater safety.
“Of that total, 82 installations were carried out in the Kuching region, 152 in Sibu, and 65 in Miri.
“These installations comprise 17 navigation buoys, 23 beacons, 21 transit lights, 17 bridge lights, 93 bridge daymarks and signage, as well as 128 river traffic signs,” he said.
He said this when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting here on Monday.
Additionally, he noted that 93 bridge daymarks and signage along with 128 river traffic signs have been installed across the state's waterways.
“These AtoNs enhance river travel safety by assisting boat operators in navigating waterways and passing beneath bridges, thereby safeguarding passengers, cargo, and communities reliant on river transport,” he added.
The provision of navigational aids is vital to support safe river movement, particularly for communities depending on water transport as a primary link for daily activities and goods delivery. — UKASnews
