Contract Period For Bumiputera Court Magistrates Proposed To Be Extended To Three Years
KUCHING: The contract period for newly appointed Sarawak Bumiputera Court Magistrates is proposed to be extended from one year to three years to attract and retain qualified candidates, while ensuring continuity in the state’s judicial services.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said the current contract period was among the constraints in recruiting magistrates, particularly candidates with relevant legal qualifications and experience.
“This extension could help attract and retain qualified candidates, ensure continuity in judicial services, and support effective case management and timely access to justice,” he said.
He said this when delivering his ministry’s winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting here on Monday.
He said the Sarawak Bumiputera Courts currently had four magistrates serving in District Bumiputera Courts, two magistrates in Resident Bumiputera Courts, and one President of the Bumiputera Court of Appeal.
However, the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Sarawak Bumiputera Courts currently had seven vacancies for Resident Bumiputera Court Magistrates and eight vacancies for District Bumiputera Court Magistrates.
“The Office of the Chief Registrar is working closely with the Sarawak Human Resource Development and Management Unit to identify suitable candidates to fill these vacancies,” he added. -UKASnews
