'Prominent Cantonese Leaders Of Sarawak' Book Highlights Historic Contributions To Sarawak's Nation-Building
KUCHING: A new historical publication entitled ‘Prominent Cantonese Leaders of Sarawak’ by Kuching-born author Dr Hing-Yan Lee was officially launched on Monday, shining a light on the pioneering Cantonese leaders who contributed significantly to Sarawak’s social and economic development.
The 136-page book documents the lives, leadership, and enterprise of prominent Cantonese figures across successive historical eras, spanning early migration, the Brooke era, British colonial rule, and the transition toward modern Sarawak.
Featured personalities include early pioneers Lau Chek, Teng Kung Suk, and Kong Yik Khing, community leaders Chan Chak and Lee Weng Thong, alongside distinguished business and public figures such as Khan Ah Chong, Lam Tee Chew, Wong Cheong Way, and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan.
Writing the foreword for the book, Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian commended Dr Lee for his dedicated efforts in preserving Sarawak's rich heritage and historical identity.
"As Sarawak continues its journey towards becoming a developed and high-income region, such meaningful work on the preservation of our history and heritage must be sustained to shed greater light and better understanding of the sacrifices, struggles and achievements of our predecessors which brought us to where we are today.
"It is therefore imperative for us to have a good understanding of our rich history, culture, heritage and identity, which will inevitably play a vital role on our part in Sarawak's nation building," he said.
Despite representing a smaller dialect group within Sarawak’s Chinese population, Cantonese pioneers played pivotal roles in establishing trade networks, opening agricultural land, founding clan associations, and supporting schools and charitable institutions.
Many also served in civic capacities on municipal councils and advisory bodies to preserve social harmony.
Dr Hing-Yan Lee, an IT professional based in Singapore with a passion for Sarawakian heritage, compiled the volume using extensive documentary research, family archives and community records.
The publication serves as an invaluable resource for historians, educators and the broader public seeking to understand the multicultural foundations of Sarawak's nation-building journey.
The book will be available in selected bookstores from 30 October 2026. -UKASnews
