Greater Participation Of Sarawakians In Territorial Army Needed
KUCHING: The participation of more Sarawakians in the Territorial Army Regiment (Rejimen Askar Wataniah) needs to be increased to strengthen the preparedness of the national defence system through community involvement in aspects of security and defence.
Commander of the Malaysian Third Infantry Brigade (3rd Brigade) Brigadier General Zulkininie Yunus said the level of participation of Sarawakians in the Territorial Army is still low compared to their involvement in the regular forces.
“If we compare it to the other states, our participation level is still quite low and we have to increase the awareness of the people of Sarawak, regardless of whether they are working or not, to participate and serve in the Territorial Army Regiment,” he said.
He said this in a press conference after leading a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Wednesday.
According to him, Sarawak has two Territorial Army regiments, namely the 511 Regiment in Kuching and the 510 Regiment in Sibu which provide opportunities for the people of this state to contribute in terms of national defence.
He said the participation of Sarawakians in the force would not only strengthen defence capabilities but also foster cooperation between the security forces, government and community.
"I am confident that with the participation of Sarawakians, we will be able to further strengthen the nation's defence system," he said.
He added that cooperation between the military, government agencies and the community is essential to ensure national sovereignty and peace continue to be safeguarded.
According to him, an integrated approach involving the government and society is also in line with the concepts of 'Whole-of-Government' and 'Whole-of-Society' which emphasises the joint role in strengthening national security.
Therefore, Brigadier General Zulkininie said the brigade would continue raising awareness among Sarawakians about opportunities to serve in the Territorial Army, particularly those interested in contributing to the nation without joining the regular armed forces. -UKASnews
