China Praises Sarawak’s Culinary Diversity, Calls For Stronger Cultural Exchange
KUCHING: The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping, commended Sarawak’s vibrant and multicultural food landscape, describing it as a rich tapestry shaped significantly by the Chinese community over generations.
Speaking at the inaugural “Flavours of Sarawak, Fellowship of Culinary Friends” Dinner, Xing said the Chinese diaspora has long contributed to the growth of Sarawak’s culinary identity, with iconic dishes such as Kompia and Kolo Mee originating from early Chinese pioneers.
He noted that Chinese restaurants can now be found in every town across the state, offering both traditional dishes and modern fusion creations that continue to attract local and international diners.
Highlighting Kuching’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Xing said the recognition reflects the state’s diverse culinary traditions and strong community heritage.
He also acknowledged the role of the annual Kuching Festival, which draws visitors from around the world and showcases the city’s multicultural charm through food.
Xing encouraged chefs, restaurateurs and F&B practitioners in Sarawak to continue preserving authentic culinary traditions while embracing innovation and skills development.
He said cultural exchange through cuisine remains a meaningful pathway for friendship and cooperation, and welcomed Sarawak’s culinary professionals to visit China for study trips, skill enhancement and collaborative opportunities.
“Food is a powerful bridge that deepens understanding between our peoples,” he said, expressing appreciation to those in Sarawak’s culinary industry who have helped keep Chinese culinary heritage alive. -UKASnews
