IP Awareness Boosted To Safeguard Divisional Signature Events
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is intensifying intellectual property (IP) awareness among Divisional Tourism Task Groups (DTTGs) to ensure divisional signature events are properly protected and preserved as part of Sarawak’s cultural identity.
According to Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, stronger IP literacy is essential as more divisions develop unique tourism products.
“The Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) adopts a strategy centred on education and intellectual property protection, ensuring DTTG understands the importance of each event, copyright and IP,” he said.
He said this when responding to Krian Assemblyman Friday Belik during a question-and-answer session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.
Datuk Sebastian said the Ministry conducts regular briefing sessions to familiarise DTTG members with copyright, trademarks, geographical indications and the safeguarding of traditional cultural expressions.
“These sessions provide essential knowledge on various aspects of intellectual property,” he added.
He also confirmed that several divisional signature events have been registered for IP protection to safeguard authenticity and prevent unauthorised use, ensuring these events remain uniquely tied to Sarawak.
He said this approach strengthens cultural ownership and supports long-term tourism growth, as clear event branding plays an increasingly important role in promoting local identity and attracting visitors. -UKASnews
