Bukit Assek Redevelopment To Transform Sibu Into a Modern Urban Centre
KUCHING: The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project is set to be a long-term blueprint that will transform Sibu into a modern, resilient and vibrant urban centre.
According to Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, the master plan is currently being finalised by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) in collaboration with international consultant Ramboll.
Once completed, approved and announced, the implementation will follow a comprehensive 15 to 20-year roadmap beginning in 2026.
“This reflects our Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg’s commitment that Sibu must evolve into a modern town with its own character, where sustainable infrastructure, flood mitigation, and economic growth are integrated with the needs of the people,” he said.
He said this when debating the Supply (2026) Bill, 2025 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.
According to Joseph, the redevelopment area has now expanded from 497 acres to 830 acres, incorporating riverbank and swamp zones to ensure comprehensive, scientific and long-term planning.
This expansion, he said, will enable systematic infrastructure development that addresses long-standing flooding issues while unlocking land value for commercial, residential and community development.
“The economic spillover from this project extends far beyond Bukit Assek. It will create jobs, stimulate the construction and service sectors, and attract investors from within and beyond Sarawak.
“We are encouraged that LCDA has already showcased this project at the Sarawak Mega Fair 2025 in Singapore, positioning Bukit Assek as an international investment focal point and highlighting Sarawak’s potential under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he added. -UKASnews
