Sarawak Finalises Design For Telang Usan–Mulu Road Upgrading, Tender Expected In Early 2026
KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is pushing ahead with the upgrading of the ex-logging road in Telang Usan and Mulu, with design works now being finalised before the project is tendered in the first quarter of 2026.
Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development I (Infrastructure Development), Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, said the project involves the construction and upgrading of approximately 30.21 kilometres of road, together with nine bridges.
“The proposed upgrading of the ex-logging road at Telang Usan and Mulu involves the construction and upgrading of approximately 30.21 kilometres of road, including nine bridges,” he said, responding to questions from Telang Usan Assemblyman, Dato Dennis Ngau, during the question-and-answer session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Thursday.
He explained that the Public Works Department (JKR) has divided the works into two phases to speed up delivery.
Phase 1 covers road construction at Long Liaw, Long Pelutan Julan, Long Suling and Long Pua, while Phase 2 includes work at Long Selatung Tepalit, Long Naha, Long San, Lio Mato and Long Peluan.
Both phases collectively account for major bridge components, pedestrian access structures and JKR R1 standard road upgrades.
Datuk Ir Aidel informed the House that although the original scheme value stood at RM250 million, the refined cost estimate is RM278 million based on the detailed works required across both phases.
He added that the upgraded route will directly benefit nine settlements spanning Lio Mato, Long Pulan, Long Peluan, Long Pua, Long Liaw, Long Pelutan Julan, Long Selatung Tepalit, Long Suling, Long Naha and Long San.
To ensure timely commencement, he noted that Phase 1 is now in its final design stage and is on track for tender in early 2026.
“Jabatan Kerja Raya is currently in the process of finalising the design for Phase 1 and is expected to call for tender in the first quarter of 2026,” he said.
The Deputy Minister emphasised that the upgraded accessibility will significantly improve mobility for rural communities along the Telang Usan–Mulu corridor once completed. - UKASnews
