Sarawak Pinpoints 17 Sporting Events For SEA Games 2027 In Kuching, Torch Run To Involve All Regions
KUCHING: A total of 17 sporting events will be centred in Kuching for the 2027 SEA Games, based on the city’s existing infrastructure, available facilities, and logistical capacity that already meet international standards.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said Kuching was chosen as the main host city by the Malaysia SEA Games Secretariat (MASOC) after a thorough assessment of the facilities already in place.
“This decision takes into account the transportation network, accommodation capacity, and the readiness of sporting infrastructure in Kuching.
“Improvement works will also be carried out on several major facilities to ensure they fully comply with international specifications,” he said in response to a question from Meradong Assemblyman, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, during the Third Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Thursday.
He emphasised that although the sporting events will be concentrated in Kuching, other divisions will not be left out.
Their involvement will be ensured through the 2027 SEA Games Torch Run, which will take place throughout the state to connect communities and bring the spirit of the Games to every area in Sarawak, including Sarikei.
Datuk Gerald also noted that hosting the Games aligns with the state’s broader strategic projects leading up to 2027, including the development of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system and the state-owned airline, AirBorneo.-UKASnews
