Upgraded Public Toilets At Padungan Garden Enhance Inclusivity, Visitor Comfort
KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has completed the upgrading of public toilet facilities at Padungan Garden, a move aimed at enhancing visitor comfort and supporting the area’s growing role as a tourism and community hub.
The upgraded facility was officially handed over on Tuesday afternoon and witnessed by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who said the improvement forms part of MBKS’ continued efforts to strengthen public amenities in high-traffic areas.
Dato Wee noted that Padungan has evolved into a key tourism destination over the years, with its heritage shophouses, vibrant street food scene and night markets attracting both locals and visitors, particularly during the evening.
“With the growth of activities here, public facilities must be ready to serve people not only during the day, but also at night,” he said, adding that the upgrading of the public toilets was timely following the completion of nearby tourist bus parking facilities.
He explained that the project, implemented under the BP1 allocation from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, commenced in June this year and has now undergone all required inspections prior to its official handover.
The upgraded toilets feature inclusive design elements, including facilities for persons with disabilities (OKU), senior citizens and families with young children, as well as a changing room, improved lighting and supporting structures connected to the surrounding public spaces.
“This project emphasises inclusivity. All facilities are designed to ensure accessibility and comfort for residents, tourists and vulnerable groups,” he said.
Dato Wee added that the improvement works form part of a broader enhancement of the Padungan Garden area, which includes better connectivity between public amenities and recreational spaces.
The project involved a total cost of RM174,250 reflects MBKS’ commitment to creating a more inclusive, comfortable and visitor-friendly city environment. -UKASnews
