Kanowit-Sedaya Ferry Service Launched, Enhancing Connectivity For Rural Communities
KANOWIT: The Kanowit-Sedaya ferry service officially commenced operations today, marking a significant step forward in improving transportation connectivity and daily mobility for residents along Jalan Kubu and Kampung Sedaya here.
The kick-off ceremony was officiated by Ngemah Assemblyman Anyi Jana at Ferry Ramp Site A, Jalan Kubu, and was attended by about 200 guests including community leaders and representatives from relevant agencies.
In his address, Anyi said the ferry service had been a longstanding concern frequently raised during Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sittings, particularly due to the challenges faced by residents travelling between Kanowit town and Jalan Nibong Tada.
He explained that prior to the ferry’s operation, residents from Jalan Nibong Tada were required to travel via the Batang Rajang Bridge in Durin to reach Kanowit town, resulting in longer travel times and added inconvenience.
“With the commencement of this ferry service, travel time will be significantly reduced, providing a more direct and efficient route for the local community,” he said, adding that the service would positively impact daily commuting, access to essential services and economic activities.
Anyi expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak Government and the Public Works Department (JKR) Sibu Division for fulfilling the needs and requests of the people in Kanowit through the implementation of the ferry service.
He also urged users to make responsible use of the service and to strictly adhere to safety guidelines set by the ferry operator to ensure smooth and safe operations for all passengers.
Touching on operational hours, Anyi said that during the Christmas and New Year festive season from 24 December 2025 to 3 January 2026, the ferry will operate from 4 am until 12 midnight.
Thereafter, normal operating hours will be from 4 am to 10 pm.
Also present were Machan Assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, Political Secretary to the Minister of National Unity Dr Stephen William, JKR Sibu Division Engineer Ir. Chieng Siong Ming, Kanowit District Officer’s representative Casseylia Benet, department heads and community leaders. -UKASnews
