Selangau Poised To Emerge As A New Economic Growth Hub
KUCHING: Selangau has the potential to emerge as a new economic growth centre in the central region of Sarawak through the proposed development of a small and medium industry (SMI) area in Selangau Town.
Tamin Assemblyman Ir Christopher Gira Sambang said the rapid development taking place in the area demonstrates that Selangau is not merely a stopover town but has significant potential to develop into a new economic hub.
“The establishment of a small and medium industrial zone can attract investment in sectors such as agro-based industries, food processing, downstream timber activities, logistics, digital entrepreneurship, light manufacturing as well as rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” he said.
He said this when debating the Motion of Appreciation on the address delivered by the Sarawak Governor during the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Thursday.
Ir Christopher Gira emphasised that the initiative is also capable of generating more employment opportunities for youths in Selangau and Tamin.
In another development, he also welcomed the selection of Selangau as one of the areas for pig farming industry development in Sarawak which is expected to stimulate local economic growth.
He also called on the government to provide clarification on the current progress of the project’s implementation including employment opportunities for local residents, environmental management, biosecurity measures, waste management systems and the long-term sustainability of the industry.
The Tamin Assemblyman also emphasised the importance of local community involvement to ensure the project can be implemented smoothly, responsibly and harmoniously. -UKASnews
