Floods: Nine PPS Now Active In Sarawak, Eight Recently Opened
KUCHING: A total of nine Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) are now active in several parts of Sarawak following continuous rainfall that have caused flooding to reoccur in several areas since early Friday morning.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that of the nine PPSs in operation, one PPS in Bekenu has been open since January 4, 2026, while another eight PPSs were opened this morning involving the Kuching (Bau), Samarahan and Serian (Siburan) areas.
“I was told early this morning that there was flooding in Serian, so the State and Divisional Disaster Management Committee led by the Resident was mobilised upon receiving the report of the flood incident with the cooperation of various agencies including the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Department of Social Welfare, the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) to jointly evacuate the victims and prepare PPS to accommodate them.
“So far, the evacuation operation is going well and no complaints have been received from the public, so we are grateful to those who are ready to move,” he said.
He said this after a meeting at the Sarawak State Disaster Management Centre in Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Friday.
According to Chairman of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the newly opened PPS involved the Kampung Bijuray Mongag Multipurpose Hall, Krokong with 20 Heads of Household (KIR) and 94 victims, the PPS of Kampung Blimbin Multipurpose Hall, Krokong has not been disclosed as it is still in the process of updating data, as well as the PPS of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Endap, Kampung Endap in Samarahan involving three families and nine victims.
In the Serian Division, he said, the PPS opened was the Kampung Betong Public Hall, Kanowit involving six families with 26 victims, the PPS of SK Tanah Merah Kampung Turong involving 30 KIR and 95 victims and the PPS of SK St. Peter, Simpok involving four families with 15 victims.
Meanwhile, the PPS at Taman Duranda Emas Hall and the Kampung Lintang Baru Multipurpose Hall also had not yet disclosed the number of victims, as it is still in the process of updating data.
In a related development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah also informed that the PDRM was instructed to monitor the safety of the homes and belongings of residents left behind during the evacuation.
He added that the Sarawak State Health Department was also instructed to conduct health screenings for victims at the PPS and implement disinfection spraying to prevent the spread of disease, in line with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set. -UKASnews
