'Raja Kita' Exhibition Well-Received, Brings Community Closer To Royal Institution History
BETONG: The "Raja Kita" exhibition, held in conjunction with the Official Birthday Celebration of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Sarawak Level for 2026, has received a positive response from visitors who regard it as an ideal platform for strengthening public understanding of the nation's history and royal institution.
A visitor, Vincent Juma, said the exhibition exposed younger generations to the history of the Malay rulers — knowledge that is increasingly unfamiliar to today's society.
He noted that the display materials, including photographs and historical documentation, are effective in enhancing visitors' knowledge of Malaysia's royal institution from past to present.
"This exhibition showcases various stories and histories of our kings in Malaysia, from the past right up to the present day.
"Many young people today are unaware of this history, so when they see the photographs and materials on display, it provides very valuable knowledge to the community here in Betong," he said when met on Saturday.
Meanwhile, another visitor, Jessica Jelika, described the exhibition as a highly beneficial initiative, as it gives the community — particularly residents of Betong — the opportunity to learn more closely about the history of the royal institution.
She expressed hope that such programmes would be continued annually and that the duration be extended, so that more visitors would have the chance to attend.
"Exhibitions like this are wonderful because they expose the general public to the history of Malaysia's rulers.
"If possible, programmes like this should be held every year and extended slightly in duration, as some people are working and may not have the opportunity to attend. I also hope the programme schedule can be arranged more conveniently in the future," she said.
She also welcomed the various activities held throughout the celebration, including a public concert that successfully drew strong attendance from the local community.
In a related development, local trader Dayang Putri Faqhirah Abang Muhd Fhazil said the lively response throughout the programme had also brought tangible benefits to small-scale entrepreneurs.
She noted that sales recorded during the event were higher compared to several previous occasions, owing to the attendance of visitors from both within and outside the Betong area.
"Our sales increased throughout this programme, and the response was livelier compared to several events held previously.
"Not only traders from Betong, but some also came from Spaoh, Debak, and Sri Aman to set up stalls here. The large turnout of visitors has truly helped boost the income of small traders," she said.
She expressed hope that the Sarawak government would continue to organise large-scale programmes of this nature in the future, as the benefits extend beyond traders alone — providing opportunities for the community and students to participate in the various activities offered.
"Programmes like this benefit all parties, as they not only support traders but also enliven the local atmosphere and attract the community to come together and join in the celebrations," she added. -UKASnews
