Flood Situation Monitored At Longhouses In Meradong
BINTANGOR: The flood situation affecting several communities in the Meradong constituency continues to be closely monitored following prolonged heavy rainfall over the past few days.
Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing conducted a site visit to Rumah Panjang Untin in Sungai Mador and Rumah Michael Thomas in Nanga Stras on Saturday to assess the situation on the ground and obtain firsthand information on the impact of rising water levels on residents.
The visit was prompted by an increase in river levels in several low-lying areas, with residents reporting floodwaters encroaching into house compounds and affecting access routes to and from their villages.
During the visit, Datuk Ding engaged with affected residents to better understand their immediate needs, challenges and concerns, stressing the importance of obtaining accurate on-site information to enable appropriate assistance to be coordinated and early mitigation measures to be planned.
He also inspected the river level near Rumah Michael Thomas, noting that the river is prone to tidal surges, a situation that has raised concern among residents as several longhouses are located in close proximity and may be at risk should water levels continue to rise.
Relevant agencies and local authorities have been informed of the situation to ensure operational readiness and swift response if conditions deteriorate, while residents were advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates and river conditions over the coming days.
Datuk Ding emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of residents remain a top priority, assuring that any necessary assistance will be coordinated based on current needs and reports from the relevant agencies. -UKASnews
