LONG LELLANG: The Sarawak Government is further strengthening its rural development agenda with the proposed upgrade of the existing road to Long Lellang in the Miri Division.
The project is expected to be put out to tender by late January, paving the way for high-impact works scheduled to commence in June 2026.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) and Mulu Assemblyman, Datuk Gerawat Gala, stated that the project is significant in improving accessibility, safety, and the well-being of rural residents.
The community in Long Lellang has long faced challenges due to substandard road conditions, particularly during the rainy season.
"Roads are the pulse of development. Improved access does not only facilitate the movement of residents but also acts as a catalyst for local economic growth, broadening access to education and healthcare while enhancing community safety," he said.
Datuk Gerawat was speaking during a briefing session with Long Lellang residents, organised by the N.78 Mulu Service Centre in collaboration with the Highland Development Agency (HDA) on Monday.
The proposed project involves upgrading a 4.7-kilometre stretch of the existing road, with a primary focus on critical sections prone to damage and accessibility issues.
"Of this total, 1.185 kilometres at critical locations will be upgraded using a concrete surface to ensure a more robust and durable structure.
The remaining 3.690 kilometres will involve gravel road upgrades to improve passability and user safety," he explained.
He added that the works will include the replacement of 31 existing log culverts with safer, more functional structures.
Furthermore, three log bridges crossing main rivers will be replaced with steel composite bridges, which are sturdier and more suitable for long-term use.
Datuk Gerawat emphasised that the State Government, through the HDA as the implementing agency, is committed to ensuring the project meets all established specifications and standards.
"Provided the procurement process proceeds smoothly, construction is expected to begin in June 2026. The State Government remains committed to ensuring this project delivers maximum benefit to the people," he said.
He also called upon local residents to provide their full cooperation, including support and feedback, to ensure the project is completed effectively and without delay.
Also in attendance were HDA Regional Director Juan Ubit, Miri Division Penan Community Leader Pemanca Hanneser Uning Bong, Long Seridan and Long Lellang Area Chief Penghulu Willie Wing, and local village heads Beraok Ibuh and Tene Uked. -UKASnews
