Physical, Energy & Digital Connectivity Drives Borneo’s Growth
JAKARTA: A robust network of physical, energy, and digital connectivity has been identified as the foundation for regional growth in Borneo, positioning Sarawak as a key strategic partner in driving collaborative development with Indonesia and neighboring regions.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that Sarawak is currently aggressively implementing large-scale investments in infrastructure, utilities, and telecommunications development.
These efforts include strengthening transport and logistics chains by integrating land transport systems and constructing a new international airport and a new deep-sea port to meet the needs of a growing industrial sector.
Regarding maritime logistics, the Premier highlighted the synergy between regional assets.
"Our neighbor possesses the largest seaport in Kalimantan—the Kijing International Port—which serves as a deep-sea gateway for Kalimantan and has the potential to play a major role in complementing port operations in Sarawak.
"Through a collaborative approach, the development of this port provides mutually beneficial shipping opportunities and creates a more efficient 'long-haul' shipping network to East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe," he said.
He shared these insights during the 2026 Indonesia Economic Summit (IES) here on Tuesday.
The Premier also explained that the restoration of direct flights between Kuching and Pontianak is more than just reopening airways; it is a symbol of successful cross-border connectivity in Borneo.
This facilitates the movement of people, ideas, and businesses, while invigorating trade, tourism, education, and corporate cooperation.
"In the same spirit, Sarawak has established AirBorneo to strengthen regional air connectivity and expand links from other hubs across the globe," he added.
On the energy front, he noted that Borneo’s immense potential for renewable energy is currently receiving global attention.
"Sarawak is contributing to this momentum through close cooperation with Indonesia, including a joint hydroelectric development project in North Kalimantan with Indonesian partners.
"This partnership demonstrates how Borneo develops clean energy through practical cross-border partnerships," he explained.
Looking toward the future of Borneo by 2030, the Sarawak Premier remarked that the development of Nusantara as Indonesia's new capital will act as a major catalyst for economic growth across the entire island.
Accompanying the Premier to IES 2026 were Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, and other senior state government officials. — UKASnews
