BELAGA: The handover of the Occupancy Permit (OP) and keys for the New Belaga District Mosque marks a historic moment for the Muslim community in the remote region of Sarawak, thus reflecting the Sarawak Government's continued commitment in strengthening the development of religious infrastructure and the unity of the multiethnic society.
The ceremony held at the New Belaga District Mosque on Thursday was officiated by the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and was attended by approximately 250 guests.
In his speech, he described the construction of the mosque as the result of patience, perseverance and close cooperation from various parties since the initial proposal was submitted in 2020, despite facing various challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to him, the success of completing the mosque located deep in the inlands of Sarawak proves the commitment of the Sarawak Government, especially under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg who approved a substantial allocation to ensure that the facilities for Muslim worship continue to be strengthened.
Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman also stressed that the function of mosques in Sarawak is not limited to places of worship alone, but rather needs to be diversified with community activities and community development that benefit the local population.
He also expressed pride in the spirit of unity of the people of Sarawak which is an example to the country by emphasising the support of leaders of various religions, including the role of Belaga Assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang in proposing the construction of a mosque in Belaga.
The striking New Belaga District Mosque is expected to become an iconic landmark of the district and an attraction for foreign visitors, thus reflecting the harmony and tolerance of the local community. -UKASnews
