Sarawak Performing Arts Centre Project On Track, Reaches 29 Pct Completion
KUCHING: The renovation and transformation of the old Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building into Sarawak’s first Performing Arts Centre has reached 29 per cent physical progress.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the RM247 million project remains on track, with works slightly ahead of the original timeline.
The project is slated for completion in 2027 and is expected to become one of the new landmarks in the development of arts and culture-based tourism in Sarawak.
“Alhamdulillah, we have been informed by the Public Works Department (JKR) and the developer that the project is on schedule and even ahead by about one to two per cent,” he said when met after a site visit here on Friday.
The scope of works includes the refurbishment of the old DUN building as well as additional components, including the adjacent structure known as Lapau.
The centre will feature a performing arts venue with a seating capacity of approximately 600 and is envisioned as a premier platform for state-level and international arts and cultural events.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim said the project not only preserves the heritage value of the historic building but also breathes new life into the surrounding area as a high-impact tourism attraction.
He expressed confidence that the provision of modern and conducive performing arts facilities would invigorate local economic activity, attract more visitors and create broader opportunities for local creative practitioners to showcase their talent on a professional stage. -UKASnews
