MUKAH: The Community Leaders and Village Chiefs (KMKK) Empowerment Programme is viewed as a vital initiative in bolstering leadership capabilities at the grassroots level, ensuring that community administration is carried out more efficiently, transparently, and effectively.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai affirmed that such programmes enhance the knowledge, skills, and competency of KMKK members in fulfilling their responsibilities to the public.
According to him, continuous empowerment is essential as the role of the KMKK has become increasingly challenging, particularly in ensuring the welfare of residents is protected and that village development is well-executed.
“This programme provides an avenue for the KMKK to gain further knowledge and strengthen their leadership skills, ensuring they are better prepared to face contemporary challenges,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Selangau and Mukah District KMKK Empowerment Programme at Kingwood Resort here on Saturday.
In the meantime, Dato Sri John Sikie emphasised that the appointment of KMKK members is based on the support and trust of the majority of local residents, reflecting leadership that is respected by the community.
In relation to this, the Kakus Assemblyman reminded that appointments within the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) must be carried out inclusively to ensure full community involvement.
He also expressed his hope that every appointed KMKK member would carry out their duties with total commitment and integrity.
Meanwhile, Balingian Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi praised the implementation of the programme, describing it as a move in the right direction for empowering KMKK leadership.
He remarked that the KMKK serves not only as a bridge between the government and the people but also as a pillar of unity and wellbeing for the local community.
Also in attendance were the Member of Parliament for Selangau Edwin Banta, Tellian Assemblyman Royston Valentine, Selangau District Officer Yalin Asan, and Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip.-UKASnews
