Earth Hour 2026 Raises Public Awareness, MBKS Promotes Green Practices
KUCHING: Earth Hour 2026 continues to serve as a platform to strengthen sustainability awareness with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) intensifying efforts to promote energy-saving practices and environmental conservation, while the Sri Aman District Council acts as the official host this year.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the global initiative serves as an important platform to encourage community participation towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
Accordig to him, Earth Hour is not just a symbolic act of turning off the lights but also helps raise awareness and foster behavioural change among the community.
“Earth Hour is not just about turning off the lights but also about showing that small collective actions can make a big impact,” he said at a press conference on Friday.
In line with this commitment, MBKS will turn off lighting at council offices, public amenities, and selected key locations for one hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm, following the global Earth Hour schedule.
At the same time, participation from hotels, shopping centres, schools, and corporate organisations also reflects broad support for the sustainability agenda.
He said the participation of various sectors shows that environmental conservation requires integrated collaboration between the government, private sector, and the community.
In this regard, the public is encouraged to participate by switching off lights for one hour and practising energy-saving as part of their daily lifestyle.
