KOTA SAMARAHAN: Talent development in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) continues to be the main agenda of the Sarawak Government in producing a highly skilled young generation, in line with the aspirations of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said that these efforts are strengthened through the implementation of various initiatives including the organisation of programmes such as the International Science, Technology and Engineering Expo (i-STEEX) 2026 which serves as an important platform to unearth innovative talents among students.
According to him, such programmes reflect the commitment of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in supporting the development of STEM education and inculcating innovation at the school level.
“Programmes like this are in line with the Sarawak Government’s agenda to produce a generation that is not only knowledgeable, but capable of leading change for the better,” he said during his speech at the Closing Ceremony and Prize Presentation of i-STEEX 2026 at DeTAR PUTRA on Thursday.
He said mastery of skills such as analytical thinking, creativity, innovation and technological literacy is very important in preparing the young generation to face the economic sectors of the future including digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.
At the same time, he also stressed the importance of mastery of the English language, particularly in STEM subjects, in line with the implementation of the policy of using the language in teaching Science and Mathematics in Sarawak.
“By 2027 to 2029, more pure science subjects will be taught in English. Therefore, students need to be prepared to master this language to increase their competitiveness,” he explained.
Commenting further, Dato Sri Roland Sagah said his ministry was taking a proactive approach in talent development by shaping and guiding this potential from the beginning of schooling instead of waiting for the talent to emerge naturally.
The effort is also supported through participation in platforms such as WorldSkills Malaysia and WorldSkills International as well as close collaboration with the industry to ensure students are prepared with relevant skills and meet the needs of the job market.
At the same time, he recognised the crucial role of teachers as the main catalyst in shaping the minds and confidence of students.
“Behind every successful student, there is a dedicated teacher. The role of educators is not just to impart knowledge, but to shape the way of thinking and confidence of the future generation,” he said.
He also encouraged students to dare to try and not be afraid of failure in the learning process, as well as continuing to develop ideas to achieve success at a higher level, including internationally.
The i-STEEX 2026 programme, which brings together the participation of students from all over Sarawak, is seen as an effective medium to connect schools, universities, government agencies and industry in building a holistic STEM education ecosystem. -UKASnews
